Necklace Length Guide: How to Choose the Right Chain for Every Neckline

You find a necklace you love, order it, put it on and... it lands in the wrong spot. It hides under your collar, gets lost in a crewneck, or hits right at a seam. Usually the problem isn't the necklace. It's the length.

Necklace length decides where the eye goes and how a piece works with your neckline. This guide covers the standard US necklace lengths, what each one looks like when you wear it, and how to match chain length to the tops you actually own.

  • Most women's necklaces come in 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 and 30 inch lengths. Eighteen inches is the most popular and the most versatile.
  • Match the shape of the neckline: rounder necklines suit shorter chains, and V-necks suit pendants that echo the V.
  • When you layer, leave about 2 inches between each strand so they don't tangle.
  • Measure a chain you already like with a soft tape measure. It's the fastest way to pick a new length.

Necklace Length Chart

These lengths are based on an average US women's neck size of about 13 to 14 inches. If your neck is larger, a chain will sit a little higher than described, so go up one size.

  • 14 inches (choker): sits snugly around the base of the neck. Great with off-the-shoulder tops, strapless dresses and open collars.
  • 16 inches (collarbone): rests right on the collarbone. A classic length for a small pendant or a delicate chain on its own.
  • 18 inches (princess): falls just below the collarbone. The most common length and the easiest to wear with almost everything.
  • 20 inches (matinee): sits a few inches below the collarbone. Good for pendants worn with crewnecks and higher necklines.
  • 24 inches (long): lands at or just above the bust line. Use it as the bottom layer of a stack or with a high neckline.
  • 30 to 36 inches (opera and rope): long, statement lengths that can be worn single, doubled up or knotted.

Men's chains usually run longer: 20 to 22 inches is standard, and 24 inches is popular for wearing over a T-shirt.

Match the Necklace to Your Neckline

The simplest rule: your necklace should follow, or contrast with, the shape of your neckline, and it should never fight with the seam.

  • Crewneck: wear a chain that sits above the neckline (16 inches) or one that falls well below it on top of the fabric (20 to 24 inches). Avoid lengths that land right on the edge.
  • V-neck: choose a pendant that points down and sits inside the V. An 18 or 20 inch chain usually works best.
  • Scoop neck: a rounded collar suits a 16 to 18 inch chain or a pendant that mirrors the curve.
  • Button-down shirt: open two buttons and wear a 16 or 18 inch chain, or button up and layer a longer chain over the collar.
  • Turtleneck: go long. A 24 to 30 inch pendant or chain over the knit looks clean and intentional.
  • Strapless or off-the-shoulder: a choker or 16 inch collar necklace keeps the focus on your shoulders.

How to Layer Necklaces by Length

Layering looks effortless when it's actually planned. Start with three lengths spaced about 2 inches apart, such as 16, 18 and 20 inches, or 16, 20 and 24 for a looser look.

  • Vary the weight: mix one fine chain, one medium chain and one pendant so each layer has its own job.
  • Put the heaviest piece at the bottom. Gravity keeps it in place and stops the lighter chains from sliding under it.
  • Use one finish or repeat it. All gold, all silver, or a mix where each metal appears at least twice.
  • Use a layering clasp or a necklace detangler if your chains always end up knotted.

How to Measure Your Ideal Length at Home

  1. Take a necklace you already love wearing and lay it flat. Measure it from end to end, clasp included. That's your sweet spot.
  2. No favorite necklace? Drape a string or phone charger cable around your neck, hold it where you want the pendant to sit, then measure it.
  3. Add about 2 inches if you plan to wear the necklace over thick sweaters or layers.
  4. Not sure between two sizes? Pick the longer one, or look for a chain with an extender so you can wear it at both lengths.

Picking a Pendant for the Right Length

Pendant size and chain length should be in proportion. Tiny pendants, like a solitaire, initial or birthstone, look best at 16 to 18 inches, close to the face. Bigger medallions, lockets and coins need the room of a 20 to 24 inch chain so they don't look crowded. If you're shopping for a gift, 18 inches is the safest bet for almost anyone.
